Family-owned since 1979, the iconic Lakers were sold to Dodgers co-owner Mark Walter. Here's a breakdown, plus what comes next.
From $67.5 Million to $10 Billion: The Lakers’ Legacy Sale
In 1979, Jerry Buss—a real estate mogul—purchased the Lakers for about $67.5 million from Jack Kent Cooke that also included the LA Kings and the Los Angles Forum. Over the next few decades, Buss transformed the franchise into a dynasty—11 NBA titles (the most in that time frame) and a global fanbase. By his passing in 2013, Forbes valued the team near $1 billion. Fast forward to today: a blockbuster deal values the franchise at $10 billion, with Mark Walter, co-owner of the Dodgers, stepping in as the new majority owner. The deal marks the richest sales in US pro sports history.
Meet the Buyer: Dodgers Mogul Mark Walter
Mark Walter, the CEO of TWG Global a diversified holding company, also has interests in multiple pro sports organizations including the aforementioned Dodgers, Los Angels Sparks, and the newly formed Cadillac Formula 1 team. Under his stewardship, the Dodgers have claimed World Series titles in 2020 and 2024. Walter's purchase of the Lakers cements Los Angeles as his sports kingdom.
What’s Next Under Walter’s Reign?
While maintaining the Lakers’ legacy of star power and championships, look for Walter to lean into innovation—think advanced facility tech, marketing expansion, and cross-platform integration with his other Los Angeles holdings in the Dodgers & Sparks. Expect dynamic fan experiences and deepened L.A. brand synergy. Jeanie Buss will also remain the Lakers' governor and continue to run the team for a number of years as she and her family will also maintain around 15% ownership at least for now.
