How Much Do NBA Draft Picks Actually Make

How Much Do NBA Draft Picks Actually Make

When NBA players hear their name called on draft night, it’s not just a dream come true—it’s usually a guaranteed payday. But how much does each pick actually bring in? Let’s break it down.

First-Round Contracts:

According to Fansided.com these are the first round payments:

  • Length: 4 years (first 2 years typically guaranteed, with team options for years 3 & 4)

  • Pay Scale: Each pick has a preset salary slot with about 80%-120% flexibility for negotiation.

Second-round picks have more flexibility—some opt for shorter deals to hit free agency faster, betting on themselves.

Why NBA Draft Picks Can't Return to College – And the International Twist

The NCAA Rule (No Take-Backs!)

  • Once a player hears their name called in the NBA Draft, their NCAA eligibility is over.

  • If you're drafted, you can't go back to college hoops, even if you don’t sign a contract.

Players can test the draft waters by entering the draft and withdrawing before the deadline (exact date is set by the NCAA). But once drafted? It's game over for college ball.

International Players Have Different Rules

  • International players (born outside the U.S. and playing internationally) can be drafted.

  • Teams retain their NBA rights, but players can stay overseas and continue playing—and getting paid—while developing.

Example: Hugo Gonzalez, drafted by the Boston Celtics, could easily stay overseas earning money while Boston holds his rights until they negotiate.
