Friday Night Recap: Aces Tame Mystics in Home Opener

The Las Vegas Aces returned home in style Friday night, handing the Washington Mystics a loss 75–72 in front of an excited home crowd. Trailing by as much as 12 points, the Aces mounted a late-game comeback, scoring the final nine points to clinch the win. Jackie Young led the charge for the Aces with a 25 point night, while A’ja Wilson delivered another excellent performance to start the year with 15 points and 12 rebounds — her third straight double-double to open the season. Chelsea Gray also added 17 points of her own, rounding out a balanced offensive effort.

Washington was led by Sonia Citron with 19 points, but the Mystics saw 4 of their players put in double digit points (Kiki Iriafen-17, Jade Melbourne-14, and Sug Sutton-10). Iriafen, who was the number 4 overall pick in this year's draft matched A'ja Wilson with her third double double of the year proving to be a good pick by the Mystics.

With the win, the Aces improved to 2–1 and kept the momentum rolling after falling in their season opener to the Liberty.

Today, the Aces (2–1) travel to Seattle to face the Storm (2–1), with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 PM PT. This game marks Jewell Loyd’s first return to Seattle since joining Las Vegas, adding an emotional layer to the matchup.

The Storm, led by Skylar Diggins-Smith and Nneka Ogwumike, have been strong defensively, allowing a league-low 74.0 points per game.  Diggins-Smith is averaging 22.0 points per game, shooting 45.7% from the field and 55.6% from beyond the arc.

The Aces will rely on their core trio of Wilson, Young, and Loyd to navigate Seattle's defense. Wilson leads the team with averages of 22.7 points and 12.7 rebounds per game.
