Sale has been a major part of Atlanta’s rotation, posting 177 strikeouts through 144 innings. With Schlittler following right behind in ERA but also putting up 201 strikeouts in his 163.2 innings pitched.

The Brewers have established themselves as baseball’s winningest team entering the final month, while Tampa Bay and LA remain firmly in the postseason picture. The Braves meanwhile are just behind the Rays and Dodgers at 82–56, giving them a solid chance at reaching the postseason as well.

Missing Players Shaping the Final Month

September is arriving with several contenders still waiting for important pieces to return.

Aaron Judge — Yankees

Aaron Judge remains one of the biggest injury storylines in baseball. The Yankees captain has missed months with a stress fracture in his ribs, and his recovery is being closely monitored as he and the team still hope for a possible September return.

His return could dramatically change the Yankees' lineup during the postseason push and into the playoffs.

Giancarlo Stanton — Yankees

Stanton's season has been interrupted by another major setback. After dealing with a right calf strain, he suffered a moderate strain to his left calf during his rehabilitation.

The timing is especially concerning because Stanton has appeared in only 24 games this season. Yankees manager Aaron Boone has acknowledged that Stanton could potentially miss the remainder of the 2026 season, although a return has not been completely ruled out.

Ketel Marte — Diamondbacks

Few injury and clubhouse stories have been more unusual than Ketel Marte's.

Marte unexpectedly failed to show up at Fenway Park for Arizona's game against Boston on Aug. 17. The Diamondbacks initially placed him on the restricted list after he did not report to the team. He was subsequently evaluated for left knee inflammation.

Marte eventually met with manager Torey Lovullo and general manager Mike Hazen, with the organization describing the meeting as productive. He made his way back on the filed tonight and apologized for his unexplained absence.

Marte was batting .249 with 21 home runs and 67 RBIs before the absence.

September Storylines to Watch

The final month will ultimately come down to health as much as statistics. The Yankees are hoping Judge can return in time to make an impact, while Stanton faces a much more uncertain outlook. Arizona will be watching Marte closely, and contenders across both leagues are trying to get key pitchers and position players back before the postseason.

With the Brewers leading baseball, Schwarber leading the home run race and several injured stars potentially returning, September is shaping up to be one of the most important months of the 2026 MLB season.
