NFL Rule Changes for 2025
The NFL added some wrinkles this year, and they could play a big role in how games unfold:
Kickoff touchbacks now come out to the 35-yard line instead of the 30. Expect teams to play more aggressive on returns and squib kicks.
Onside kicks remain tough—teams can now attempt them at any point in the game not just the fourth quarter and must declare intent as surprise onsides are still off the table.
Overtime now guarantees both teams get a possession, UNLESS the 10 minute clock expires during or by the end of the first possession, or a safety occurs on the opening drive. Meaning, no more sudden death on an opening TD.
Virtual measurements are being piloted as was shown in the preseason, with high-tech ball tracking cutting down on those iconic but clunky chain-gang moments. BUT, officials still spot the ball prior to the "Hawk-Eye" technology being used.
