Hurricanes Avoid the Broom, Force NHL Playoff Game 5
The Carolina Hurricanes finally showed some fight on Tuesday night, staving off elimination with a 3-0 victory over the Florida Panthers in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals. After losing the first three games in which they looked overwhelmed, the Canes returned to form with strong defensive play and strong goaltending.
Logan Stankoven got things started for the Hurricanes in the second after a scorless first period. Sebastian Aho and Jordan Staal then each added on an emply net goal late in the third to secure the win for Carolina. Frederik Andersen also bounced back in a major way, stopping all 20 shots, while his adversary Sergei Bobrovsky was still solid again for the Panthers with 25 saves, but his team’s scoring was held in check for the first time this series.
With the Panthers still leading 3–1, the NHL Playoff series heads back to Raleigh for Game 5 tomorrow.
Western Conference Finals Game 4 Sees Oilers Oust Stars
The Edmonton Oilers secured a commanding 4–1 victory over the Dallas Stars in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals, taking a 3–1 series lead and moving within one win of the Finals. Corey Perry broke a 1–1 tie with a power-play goal in the second period, with Leon Draisaitl contributing a goal and an assist. While Kasperi Kapanen and Adam Henrique added empty-net goals late in the third period to wrap things up. Goaltender Stuart Skinner also made 28 saves, anchoring the Oilers' defense.
The Stars' lone goal came from Jason Robertson in the second period. And while he had a good outing goaltender Jake Oettinger still had a night other goaltenders in this year's playoffs would dream of, putting up 29 saves on 31 shots for a .935 save %.
Dallas now faces elimination as the series shifts back home for them in Game 5 on Thursday.
