Las Vegas Aces Strike First in the Finals
The Las Vegas Aces wasted no time with a statement Game 1 win of the WNBA Finals, taking down the Phoenix Mercury 89–86 in Vegas. The energy in Vegas was electric as A’ja Wilson, who once again led the charge, putting up 21 points and 10 rebounds in another MVP-caliber performance. Dana Evans also put up 21 points though in the needed support of her own. With Jewell Loyd bucketing 18 points herself and, Jackie Young added 10 points.
The Aces’ defense proved to be the difference, forcing 12-5 turnovers and keeping Phoenix’s offense from finding any rhythm. Alyssa Thomas and the Mercury had flashes of brilliance, but Vegas’ pace and firepower were just too much. With the win, the Aces take a 1–0 lead in the best-of-seven series and continue to defend their home court dominance.
Game 2 Preview: Vegas Looks to Keep the Heat On
Game 2 tips off Sunday in Las Vegas, and the pressure shifts squarely onto the Mercury. Down 0–1, Phoenix must find a way to slow A’ja Wilson and limit second-chance points if they hope to even the series. Expect the Mercury to turn up the defensive intensity with Thomas and rely on Sabally and Cooper to get going early.
For the Aces, it’s all about consistency. Becky Hammon’s squad knows the importance of holding serve at home before the series shifts to Phoenix midweek. If Vegas can maintain their inside dominance and keep spreading the ball around, they’ll be in prime position to take full control of the Finals before heading on the road.
