Thanksgiving Football: A Tradition That Built the Holiday
NFL games on Thanksgiving are as iconic as turkey, stuffing, and your uncle yelling at the TV, and it all started with one bold marketing move back in 1934.
How It Started: The Detroit Lions’ Big Idea
The Detroit Lions kicked off the tradition in 1934, playing the Chicago Bears in a game that was nationally broadcast thanks to Lions owner George A. Richards, who also owned a radio station. By pairing his team with a nationwide promotional machine, Richards created a holiday tradition that stuck.
The Lions have now appeared in 85 Thanksgiving games, with only a six-year gap during World War II.
America’s Team Joins the Party
The Dallas Cowboys later became the second mainstay of Thanksgiving, debuting in 1966 and now logging 57 total appearances. Their yearly Thanksgiving slot became a ratings monster, cementing them as part of the holiday’s football fabric.
One Team Has Never Played on Thanksgiving
Believe it or not, the Jacksonville Jaguars remain the only NFL team to never appear in a Thanksgiving game. Not once. Ever. Maybe one day they'll get invited to the holiday table.
