NFL & NFLPA Agree to New Playing Surface Format

A major shift is coming to NFL fields, one that’s been brewing for years.

The NFL and NFL Players Association have officially agreed on a new standardized format for selecting stadium playing surfaces. Instead of each team independently choosing its turf or grass setup with minimal oversight, all 32 franchises will now be required to pick from an approved list of surface types, similar to the league’s regulated helmet policy.

What This Means:

  • Approved List of Surfaces: Both natural grass variations and turf options will be included, but only those that meet safety, performance, and durability benchmarks.

  • Team Choice, League Oversight: Clubs still choose what they prefer, but only from the vetted list.

  • Reduced Injuries Is A Goal: The move follows years of data showing certain turf types have higher injury rates, especially with lower-body, non-contact injuries.

  • More Consistency for Players: Just like helmets, if it’s not approved, it’s not allowed.

Players have been vocal about wanting safer surfaces, with many pushing hard for all-grass fields. While this isn’t a full grass mandate, it’s a major step toward standardizing safer environments across the league.

The change could have a noticeable impact as early as next season, and all teams need to comply by the 2028 season.
