Team USA Advances To WBC Final After Thrilling Wins Over Canada & Dominican Republic

The road to the World Baseball Classic championship has been anything but easy for Team USA. Two intense knockout games after barely squeaking past the round robin stage, one a gritty quarterfinal battle and the other a dramatic semifinal ending in controversy.

Now, with the championship game looming Tuesday night, Team USA waits to see whether they’ll face Venezuela or Italy for the title.

Quarterfinal Recap: Team USA Holds Off Canada 5–3

Team USA opened the knockout stage with a strong early performance against Team Canada, ultimately securing a 5–3 victory to punch their ticket to the semifinals.

The Americans wasted no time establishing control of the game. Timely hitting throughout the lineup built a 5–0 lead by the sixth inning, fueled by key RBIs from players including Kyle Schwarber, Alex Bregman, Brice Turang, and Pete Crow-Armstrong.

On the mound, the pitching staff kept Canada largely quiet through the first half of the game, allowing the offense to dictate the pace.

Canada refused to go quietly, however. A rally in the sixth inning cut the deficit to two runs after Tyler Black delivered an RBI single and Bo Naylor launched a two run homer.

Despite the pressure, Team USA’s bullpen closed the door and sealed the 5–3 win, advancing to the semifinals.

Semifinal Drama: USA Edges Dominican Republic 2–1

If the quarterfinal showed Team USA’s offensive depth, the semifinal demonstrated their ability to grind out a win in a pitcher’s duel.

Facing a strong Dominican Republic roster, the Americans leaned heavily on pitching and a pair of clutch swings.

The Dominican Republic struck first with a solo home run from Junior Caminero in the second inning, but Team USA responded quickly in the fourth with solo blasts from Gunnar Henderson and Roman Anthony to take a 2–1 lead.

From there, the game became a tense battle between bullpens. American pitchers managed to keep one of the tournament’s most explosive offenses in check, holding the Dominican lineup scoreless the rest of the way.

The Controversial Final Strike

The game’s final moment instantly became one of the most talked about plays of the tournament.

With the Dominican Republic threatening in the ninth inning and the potential tying run already on third base, USA closer Mason Miller delivered a full count pitch to Geraldo Perdomo. The pitch was shown to be outside the strike zone, but it was called strike three by the home plate umpire, ending the game in dramatic fashion.

Instead of extending the inning with the potential winning run reaching base, the call resulted in a strikeout that sent Team USA to the final with a 2–1 victory. The controversial ending quickly sparked debate among fans, players, and analysts across the baseball world where they have recently brought challenges to spring training to avoid such instances but not yet the WBC.

WBC Championship Game Ahead: Waiting on Venezuela vs Italy

With the semifinal victory secured, Team USA now advances to the World Baseball Classic championship game on Tuesday night.

Their opponent will be determined tomorrow when Venezuela and Italy square off in the other semifinal.

Both teams present unique challenges:

  • Venezuela features one of the tournament’s deepest offensive lineups.

  • Italy has been one of the surprise teams of the tournament, playing disciplined baseball and upsetting opponents including Team USA in the round robin stage.

Regardless of who emerges from that matchup, Team USA will enter the final with momentum after back to back knockout wins, and one step away from bringing the World Baseball Classic trophy home.
